CHAPTER ONE

Background of the Study

The teaching of accounting in secondary schools has been a subject of interest for many researchers and educators. The prospects and challenges associated with it have been widely discussed in the literature (Smith, 2015; Johnson, 2018).

Smith (2015) argues that the teaching of accounting in secondary schools is crucial for preparing students for future careers in business and finance. However, he also points out that many schools lack the resources and trained teachers necessary to provide high-quality accounting education. This is a significant problem that needs to be addressed.

Johnson (2018) echoes Smith’s concerns, adding that the lack of a standardized accounting curriculum in secondary schools is another major issue. Without a standardized curriculum, it is difficult to ensure that all students are receiving the same quality of education.

Despite these challenges, there are also many promising prospects for the teaching of accounting in secondary schools. For example, the increasing use of technology in the classroom has the potential to greatly enhance accounting education. As Johnson (2018) notes, digital tools can make accounting more interactive and engaging for students, which can in turn improve their understanding and retention of the material.
