What Makes a Child’s Colour Different from the Parents

Different genetic variables might cause a kid to have a different skin tone than either parent. The amount and kind of melanin pigment contained in human skin cells is the primary determinant of skin colour. Melanocytes are skin cells that reside in the epidermis and are responsible for producing melanin.

Melanin-making genes are passed down from both parents. The MC1R gene is just one of several involved in this process, but it’s an important one since it controls how much and what kind of melanin is made. Differences in melanin production—and hence skin color—can come from mutations in these genes.

Skin tone differences may also be caused by causes outside genetics, including environmental variables and epigenetic alterations. Sunlight, for instance, can cause melanin formation, which can darken the skin. However, irregularities in melanin synthesis can result in illnesses like albinism, in which an individual has almost no melanin in their skin, hair, and eyes.

Skin colour is a multi-factorial feature impacted by both genetics and environment. It is conceivable for an individual to have a different skin colour than their parents or siblings due to the complex inheritance patterns of these genes.
