ABSTRACT
The study examines the influence of coaches’ management skills on athletes’ competitive motivation among universities in Lagos State. Four research objectives were adopted for the study, namely: to assess the relationship between coaches’ leadership styles and athletes’ motivation levels; to examine the impact of coaches’ communication skills on athletes’ competitive drive; to analyze the role of coaches’ feedback and reinforcement techniques in enhancing athletes’ motivation; and to investigate the influence of coaches’ goal-setting strategies on athletes’ performance and motivation. The target population consists of athletes in two selected Universities in Lagos State, namely University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU). To select the needed samples for this study, the researcher used a total number of one hundred (100) athletes in two selected Universities in Lagos State – University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU). The response to the questionnaire items was analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentage method. The research hypotheses stated earlier was tested using Chi-Square Statistics. The study recommended that Coaches should focus on adopting transformational leadership practices that inspire and motivate athletes. The study concluded that Coaches’ leadership styles have significant effect on the athletes’ motivation levels.

Coaches play a pivotal role in shaping athletes’ competitive motivation, particularly in university settings where young athletes are striving to excel. According to Chelladurai (2007), a coach’s ability to manage their team effectively influences athletes’ perceptions of their own competence and belonging, which are critical components of motivation. In Lagos State, where universities compete vigorously in sports, the role of coaches becomes even more pronounced as they aim to harness the potential of their athletes through effective management strategies.
Research has indicated that effective communication between coaches and athletes fosters an environment conducive to high levels of motivation. The work of Jowett and Cockerill (2003) emphasizes the importance of a supportive coaching style that involves clear communication and feedback. In the context of universities in Lagos State, where diverse cultural backgrounds may influence athletes’ responses, coaches with strong management skills can bridge gaps in communication. This creates a trusting relationship, allowing athletes to feel more motivated to engage in their training and competitions, as they are more likely to understand their roles and expectations.
Leadership styles adopted by coaches are also crucial in determining athletes’ motivation. Transformational leadership, characterized by inspiration and encouragement, has been shown to enhance athletes’ intrinsic motivation (Sullivan & Kent, 2003). In Lagos State, coaches who practice transformational leadership can inspire their athletes to achieve higher levels of performance by fostering a sense of purpose and commitment. Such leaders are adept at recognizing individual athletes’ strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to tailor their management approach to suit the unique needs of each athlete, thereby enhancing overall motivation.
Moreover, the organizational skills of coaches—ranging from planning training sessions to managing competition schedules—directly influence athletes’ motivation. According to Williams and Kipp (2012), well-organized training environments that include structured routines lead to improved athlete performance and motivation. In the context of Lagos State universities, where competition is high, coaches who demonstrate strong organizational capabilities can instill a sense of discipline and focus among their athletes. This structured approach not only promotes motivation but also helps athletes to develop self-management skills, essential for both sports and academic success.
The intersection of coaches’ management skills and athletes’ motivation has also been explored through the lens of psychological theories. Self-Determination Theory (SDT), as outlined by Deci and Ryan (2000), posits that the fulfillment of basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—is fundamental to fostering intrinsic motivation. Coaches in Lagos State universities who exhibit effective management skills are likely to create environments that satisfy these needs, thus enhancing athletes’ motivation. By encouraging autonomy in training, providing opportunities for skill development, and fostering team cohesion, coaches can significantly impact their athletes’ motivation levels.
In conclusion, the influence of coaches’ management skills on athletes’ competitive motivation is a multifaceted issue that merits further exploration, particularly within the university context of Lagos State. The integration of effective communication, transformational leadership, organizational abilities, and psychological theories highlights the vital role coaches play in motivating athletes. As universities continue to invest in sports programs, understanding and improving coaching management skills will be essential for enhancing competitive motivation among athletes, ultimately contributing to their success both on and off the field.

However, many coaches may lack the necessary management skills—such as effective communication, leadership, and organizational strategies—to adequately support their athletes. This lack of capability can lead to diminished motivation, affecting athletes’ performance and overall well-being.
Furthermore, the diverse backgrounds of athletes in Lagos State universities complicate the coaching dynamic. Athletes may come from varying socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds, which can influence their motivation and response to coaching methods. Coaches who are not equipped with strong management skills may struggle to engage all athletes effectively, resulting in motivational disparities within teams. This situation underscores the critical need to investigate how coaches’ management styles can be adapted to better meet the needs of a diverse athlete population.

The study examines the influence of coaches’ management skills on athletes’ competitive motivation among universities in Lagos State. The study is restricted to the athletes of two selected Universities in Lagos State.

Influence: Influence refers to the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. In the context of coaching, it describes how a coach’s actions, attitudes, and management skills can impact athletes’ motivation, performance, and overall experience in sports.
Coaches’ Management Skills: Coaches’ management skills encompass the abilities and competencies that enable coaches to effectively lead and organize their teams. This includes communication skills, leadership, strategic planning, conflict resolution, and organizational capabilities. These skills are essential for creating a positive training environment and fostering athletes’ development.
Coach: A coach is an individual who provides guidance, instruction, and support to athletes in their training and competitive pursuits. Coaches play a critical role in developing athletes’ skills, strategies, and mental toughness, while also serving as motivators and mentors.
Athletes: Athletes are individuals who participate in sports or physical activities, often competing at various levels, including amateur and professional. They typically train to enhance their skills, fitness, and performance in their chosen sport and may represent their schools or teams in competitions.
Competitive: Competitive refers to the nature of engaging in a contest or rivalry, where individuals or teams strive to achieve a better performance or outcome than others. In sports, it emphasizes the drive to win and excel, often fostering a mindset focused on personal and team achievements.
Motivation: Motivation is the internal or external drive that compels individuals to take action toward achieving their goals.
